Mumbai: After Chetan Singh, a now-dismissed Railway Protection Force (RPF) constable who allegedly gunned down his senior and three passengers on the Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express, complained to Akola Central Jail authorities about feeling psychologically unwell, a doctor who examined him recommended he be taken to a hospital in Nagpur.
While the prosecution, in its reply to the jail’s letter, suggested that instead he be referred to the Thane Mental Hospital to also facilitate the trial, one of the victim’s family memers opposed it and said there was nothing wrong with the accused and he was attempting to obtain the court’s sympathy.
“…there is absolutely no medical abnormality seen in the accused… on perusal of the chargesheet and on the perusal of his own doctor’s report it is clear that he is absolutely fit and has no mental health issues and the letter issued from Akola Jail to be rejected and need not be sent to Nagpur for any medical treatment. Under the garb of mental medical condition, the accused is… trying to obtain sympathy of the… court,” the intervenor’s lawyer submitted. An accused will not stand trial if it’s concluded that he is mentally unfit to do so.
In his bail plea in Nov 2023, Singh cited mental illness and delusions of the ghostly world. It said he was suffering from “white matter disease.” tnn
