Senator Mitch McConnell has announced that he will not seek re-election next year, bringing an end to a 40-year career in Congress. The Kentucky Republican, who holds the record as the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, made the announcement on the Senate floor on Thursday, on his 83rd birthday.
“Seven times my fellow Kentuckians have sent me to the Senate,” McConnell said. “Every day in between, I’ve been humbled by the trust they place in me to do their business right here. Representing our Commonwealth has been the honor of a lifetime. I will not seek this honor an eighth time. My current term in the Senate will be my last.”
Mitch McConnell’s decision to retire comes after growing concerns about his health, which have increasingly shaped his final years in office. Once one of the most influential and polarizing figures in the modern Senate, McConnell stepped down from Republican leadership in 2024 following public episodes that raised questions about his well-being.
At 83 years old, he abruptly froze and appeared unable to speak during two separate press conferences in July and August 2024, sparking widespread speculation about his health.
His health struggles date back further—in March 2023, he suffered a serious fall at a D.C. hotel during a dinner event, leading to a five-day hospital stay. As these challenges mounted, McConnell ultimately decided not to seek re-election, marking the end of his decades-long career in the Senate.

The net worth of the Mitch McConnell
As of January 2025, Senator Mitch McConnell’s net worth was estimated to be $52.01 million, according to the Congress Live Net Worth Tracker. McConnell and his wife Elaine Chao own homes in Louisville, Kentucky, and Washington, D.C., as well as a large portfolio of stocks, bonds, and money market funds.
Despite his wealth today, McConnell was not born into riches. Growing up in the Deep South, he contracted polio as a child, an illness that nearly bankrupted his family. Reflecting on this struggle, he has earlier recalled in a 1990 campaign ad, “I recovered, but my family almost went broke.”
The majority of Mitch McConnell’s wealth can be traced back to a significant gift he received from his father in 2008. That same year, he and his wife, Elaine Chao, disclosed a family gift valued between $5 million and $25 million, according to his 2008 financial report. As per reports, Chao’s father, James Chao, gifted them a multimillion-dollar inheritance in memory of Chao’s late mother, who had passed away the previous year.
According to a 2019 Forbes report, Chao’s mother’s estate was valued at nearly $59 million, with $57.5 million tied to a closely held business interest. James Chao, now 97, is still alive, and when he passes, it is likely that another significant inheritance will further boost the couple’s wealth.
