Mumbai: Even as the civic body is facing flak over the slow progress of the cement concretisation (CC) roads project aimed at eliminating the problem of potholes— just 26% of Phase 1 works is complete—it has set a combined deadline of May 2025 for 75% of Phase 1 and 50% of Phase 2 works. A provision of Rs 3,111 crore has been made for the CC roads project in the BMC budget for 2025-26.
The BMC stated work of concreting the remaining roads has been undertaken in two phases. In Phase 1, 698 work on roads totalling 324km started in Jan 2023. Of these, 187 road works, about 26%, have been completed so far while the rest are in progress. In Phase 2, 1,420 roads totalling 377km are proposed to be concretised, of which work on 720 roads was initiated in Dec 2024. A total of 2,050km of roads are maintained by the BMC.
Concretisation of roads was initiated as per the directions of the then chief minister Eknath Shinde in 2023.
A two-year deadline had been set for the works. BMC officials defended the slow pace by pointing out that though the work order in Phase 1 was issued in Feb 2023, work started only in Oct 2023 and continued until June 10, 2024, before stopping for monsoon. Subsequently, work restarted on Oct 15, 2024.
Shinde, now deputy chief minister, said, “Mumbai is developing rapidly. We have concretised Mumbai’s roads in two phases. This budget will make it clear that Mumbai is moving forward at a fast pace for the future; Rs 43,000 crore will be spent on development works in the budget. This shows how seriously the state and central govts have taken the development of Mumbai.”
The concretised stretches include Aarey Road, Andheri Kurla Link Road, Narayan Dabholkar Marg, Sir Pochkhanwala Road, Nanabhai Moos Road connecting Navy Nagar, and Shahid Bhagat Singh Marg, among others.
BMC commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, while addressing the media on Tuesday, said guidance is being sought from prestigious institutes like IIT Bombay to maintain the standard of road works. (With Chaitanya Marpakwar)
