BHOPAL: At least three workers were trapped under the debris when an under-construction well collapsed in Chhindwara district on Tuesday evening.
While three workers managed to escape as the well began to cave in, three others, including a woman and her son, got trapped in the rubble at a depth of about 30 feet.
The incident took place at Khunajhir village on the farm of Aishrao Vastrane, within the jurisdiction of Mohkhed police station.
The trapped workers, from Budhni in Sehore district, were identified as Wasid Khan, 18, Sehzadi Khan, 50, and her son Rashid Khan, 18.
Although the workers were buried under the rubble, their heads and upper bodies remained exposed.
The police and SDRF launched a massive rescue operation at the site.
“The rescue operation began around 4pm and is still ongoing,” said Komal Singh Raghuvanshi, the in-charge of Mohkhed police station.
“We have cleared debris up to the waist of two workers and up to the shoulder of one. The well is very narrow, and the section that remains intact is weak, so we are proceeding with extreme caution. All three trapped workers are conscious and communicating, and it may take a few more hours to rescue them.”
