Kalyan: The police team probing the Kalyan girl’s rape-murder case on Friday got doctors at the Central Hospital in Ulhasnagar to carry out a medical examination of the main accused, Vishal Gawli. The doctors described Gawli as a completely normal person and wrote in the report that the accused does not need any psychological advice, police sources said.
This finding raises questions about the certificate of autism that Gawli had submitted to obtain bail in an earlier Pocso case registered against him last year. Police sources quoted the doctors’ report as stating, “He is well-oriented, conscious, cooperative, and orienting to time and place. There is no need for psychiatric opinion.”
The accused, who is in police remand until Jan 2, was brought on Friday afternoon to the state-run hospital for examination.
The investigators are taking separate statements from Vishal Gawli and his wife Sakshi so that they can be matched. Police sources said the case is being investigated by a special team formed in the Kalyan zone. Two teams are interrogating the accused, and two other teams are focused on collecting evidence in the case.
On Monday, a 13-year-old girl from Kalyan took Rs 20 from her mother to buy something to eat but did not return home. The girl’s body was found in the Bapgaon area of Bhiwandi the next day.
The police arrested Vishal Gawli from Buldhana and his wife, who helped him to dispose of the body, from Kalyan.
CM Devendra Fadnavis has said that the case will be heard in a fast-track court and appointed a special public prosecutor. The case led to protests by Kalyan residents.
