Mumbai: Bombay High Court on Friday said the parents of Akshay Shinde, the slain accused in the Badlapur school sexual assault case, need not come to court for the hearing of their petition that seeks a special investigation team (SIT) probe into their son’s death.
On Thursday, the parents had told Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Neela Gokhale they do not want to pursue the case and urged them to close it. “We have not called you. If you want to come, you may come,” said Justice Mohite Dere.
The mother repeated that they wanted the case closed as they will go to live with their daughter-in-law. The judges assured the parents they do not have to come to court.
The incident took place near the Mumbra bypass after 6 pm on Sept 23 while Shinde was being taken from Taloja jail to the Thane crime branch by the police.
The state had sought materials relied upon by the magistrate in his inquiry, which indicted five policemen for Shinde’s death, to place it before a judicial commission investigating the encounter. Since the judges wanted to go through the commission’s minutes of the meeting and the magistrate’s report, they adjourned the hearing to Feb 24.
