Navi Mumbai: A major fire started on Wed night, close to the Vashi Arenja Corner, where Cidco’s Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana for affordable housing is being constructed.
Multiple blasts were also heard at the workers’ colony due to LPG cooking gas cylinders. Fire officials, however, said there was no casualty as all workers were evacuated from the site when fire started around 9.20pm.
Purushottam Jadhav, divisional officer at Vashi fire station said, “Around 100 labourers are employed at Cidco’s construction site, where they cook food using small LPG cylinders. Prima facie, one of the cylinders blasted and fire spread to the entire camp.” A city activist has questioned if safety norms were followed at the site, especially where the workers lived. —
