Thane: A 73-year-old woman died after being hit by a vehicle in a hit-and-run accident while returning home after purchasing milk in the Teen Hath Naka area of Thane. The victim, Pushpashri Shripad Agashe, was the mother of a correspondent with a news agency and lived in the Roshni Complex. The deceased had worked for 28 years with the Department of Atomic Energy and had received DAE’s best employee award for for 2008. She was working for awareness about eye donation since 1981 with her husband Shreepad Agashe. She was also actively involved in promoting organ donation, skin donation and body donation.
Incidentally, her eyes were donated successfully courtesy help from doctors at Sahiyara Eye Bank, at the Thane civil hospital where her body was brought after the accident.
The police said Agashe left her home at 6:40 am to buy milk. While returning from the nearby store, she was hit by a vehicle traveling from Mumbai towards Nashik. The driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, leaving the elderly woman critically injured. Passing citizens quickly came to her aid and rushed her to Thane District Govt Hospital. Given the severity of her injuries, she was subsequently transferred to Sion Hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead. Her body was then sent for a post-mortem examination at Thane District Govt Hospital.
The Naupada Police registered the case and initiated an investigation. The police said they launched a probe into the case to trace the absconding driver, with police examining CCTV footage from the surrounding area. The kin of the deceased remained unaware of the tragedy for nearly two hours. Agashe inadvertently left her mobile phone at home, and when she did not return, her family began searching for her. During the accident, she was conscious enough to provide a contact number to those trying to help her. However, a miscommunication resulted in an unsuccessful attempt to contact her relatives.
A nurse residing in the same building, who works at the Civil Hospital, recognised Agashe’s body during the post-mortem and subsequently contacted her family, breaking the devastating news. MSID:: 117492398 413 |
