Navi Mumbai: 14-year-old Class 9 student jumped to his death from the fifth floor of his school building in Seawoods on Friday morning.
The incident was captured on the school’s CCTV camera, wherein the boy can be seen climbing on the safety grille at the canteen on the fifth floor and jumping off the building. He was rushed to Apollo Hospital in Belapur, where he was declared brought dead, said senior inspector Tukaram Pawale of NRI Coastal police station. Police said, prima facie, an accidental death case has been registered. “It is yet to be ascertained as to why the boy jumped to death,” said Pawale. A police source claimed that he may have taken the drastic step due to family issues as he was under mental stress for several days and was not talking to his classmates.
The school principal said they are “shocked and saddened by the tragic incident”. All students will be counselled and the management will extend support to the boy’s family, he added. — George Mendonca
