Mumbai: The BMC on Monday said that it intensified its anti-plastic campaign. On Jan 20, approximately 61 kg of plastic was seized in 29 cases, with fines amounting to Rs 1.45 lakh being collected.
As part of this campaign, 1,145 establishments were inspected. Meanwhile, data shows that from Jan 1-19, 2025, 5,783 establishments were inspected. In 118 cases, approximately 167 kilograms of plastic were seized, and fines totaling Rs 6.10 lakh were collected.
The Maharashtra govt has published the Maharashtra Plastic and Thermocol (Manufacture, Usage, Sale, Transport, Handling, and Storage) Notification, 2018. This notification and its amendments are also available on the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board’s website. According to this notification, the production, use, transport, distribution, wholesale, retail sale, and storage of single-use plastic items are banned. “Mumbai citizens are urged to refrain from using prohibited plastic items (production, use, sale, transport, handling, storage) as notified by the Maharashtra govt to protect the environment,” said BMC in a statement.
